I Suppose…

I suppose you believed the words you said
At the front of the church: “I do.”
Those words were waiting for you.
They stood waiting with me.
Did you know that you would shred them?
***
I suppose that if you had kept your vows
We would be forever united in words:
Words that wrap lives with ribbons of care;
Words that tie down lives with stakes in the ground;
Words that follow balloons as they become pixels of the sky
***
I suppose, had you said,
“Let’s make this work.”,
I would be walking down the aisle with you everyday.
Un-tethering balloons, staking our lives
And letting rice fleck my hair.
