A Million Ways to Die Democratically in the West

The ‘settled science’ cabal wants you to know that they are no longer seeking truth. They have shut their minds to any further information. Nothing you can say will change their mind. They have become frozen consciousness ideological and hell bent on making you desire their brain freeze.

Then there are The Children of this generation – the Millennials and some adults. As products of the psych community (via therapy and/or public school) they have lost the ability to discern right from wrong, good from bad. Melancholia is their porridge.

And my friends, there are too many self-disenfranchising, self-marginalizing groups – LGBT, #BlackLivesMatter, etc. – to name all of them here and now. Suffice it to say that all of the above have used the following methods in one form or another:

A Million Ways to Die Democratically in the West or How to close the American mind:

See no truth, hear no truth: Avoid discussion, debate and dissension. Become myopic and bent inward. Demand that others change to your liking and Now!

Acknowledge nothing, deny everything, be dismissive.  Case in point: Hillary Clinton, her personal server, classified intel exposed and political deniability. She may become president and then you die democratically. But anyway, “What difference at this point does it make!”

Do not confront and name evil. Use framing and PC language to synthesize evil with good; make all values equal. Make a “What difference at this point does it make!” judgment.

Demand that academia be a means for job security and not a place that fosters theoretical reasoning or knowledge.

Use academia as your second day care center.

Blame academia for your shortcomings. A mind is a terrible thing to pay for.  blame academia

Expect academia to be a confirmation of you. Look for self-affirming cliques.

See academics not as a means for intellectual pursuit but for social networking where your social sensitivities can be honed into razor sharpness.

Forget history. It’s not relevant to current self-projection.

Forget tradition. It’s not relevant to current self-projection.

Forget the Constitution. The guys who wrote it do not understand me or the emo involved in me. A SCOTUS justice will award me dignity anyway.

Democratize morals into relativistic goo. Use your group narcissism as a voter block to destroy others not included in your ethos.

Use ‘settled science’ to block all further discussion. Call all non-believers “deniers”.

Boycott, Divest and Sanction.   Exclude others from the conversation; force your will onto ‘others’. Call your apartheid stance a means to a righteous end.

Go to the psych community for help and come out with your hard drive scrubbed of values.

Do not read a book. Besides, you don’t need to burn books if no one reads them. And that will make you look less controlling.

Avoid the Bible. Read Vox and POLITICO and Sojourners so that you can share in the Collective’s hubris.

Base all your thinking on what mother TV is telling you.

Avoid deep thought and reflection at all costs. Keep your e-device on at all times. Twitter your life away. You need to be heard.

Choose a self-marginalizing motif for your life to gain a politician’s notice.

Become an SPLC “hate watcher” so you decide who’s in the conversation and who is out. See this form of segregation not as a form of apartheid.  Rather see this as a form of socially sensitive police action.

Avoid silence at all costs. You might realize you have a soul.

See government as a parent and never grow up.

Be heartfelt and anti-intellectual. Your ignorance is as good as someone’s knowledge in a democracy. (Isaac Asimov, paraphrased)

See beauty, not as intrinsic to God’s creation, but only skin deep.

Wait for Godot.

Read stream of consciousness literature.

Exercise sexual proclivities at all times.

Refuse moral courage at all times. See it as moral weakness.

Preamble and postscript your life with folly.

Listen to popular music, nothing else. An empty mind is one that can be filled with all the nuances of self.

See art as a pile of shit sitting atop a figure of Jesus. Laugh at Larry David’s tripe.

Do not choose reason. Leverage feelings every time. Enjoy the scream while you can.

Edvard Munch "The Scream"

Edvard Munch “The Scream”

Decide that God is judgmental and that you are inclusive. God doesn’t know what you know.

Become insular in your thinking. Shut out the light of day. Avoid criticism.

Don’t feed your soul. Tell God that He doesn’t exist and that you are always in control of things.

Find someone in the media who always tells you what you want to hear.

Close your eyes to your blessings and look at what others have; spend your life crying and whining about not having what overs have. Karl Marx did this. Why not you? Materialism is meaning. Right?

Ignore the Bible. Truth is what your friends let you get away with anyway (Richard Rorty).

And lastly, and not quite at the million mark, make sure that someone else is responsible for your life!

This list is not exhaustive and not a million ways to… but its Sunday and I have to call my mother.

Giving up Everest to save a life

“With just 300 meters to go before reaching the peak of Mount Everest, Israeli mountaineer Nadav Ben-Yehuda saw a Turkish climber lying unconscious in the snow, and in an instant gave up a lifetime’s dream to save his fellow climber’s life.”

Israeli Everest climber saves Turkish ‘brother’

Israeli gives up on Everest summit to help Turkish climber

I came across this story as I read Dr. Amir Aczel’s book Why Science Does Not Disprove God.

From Chapter 12, The Limits of Evolution:

“…So truly altruistic behavior—which we know has existed in the world since time immemorial—is not well explained by evolution.

An example that, to use one of [Richard] Dawkins’s favorite expressions, “deals a knockout blow,” to evolution as an acceptable explanation for altruism is the following. In May 2012, several groups of individuals attempted to climb Mount Everest, as happens every spring. One of the climbers, a young Israelis, was well on his way to the top when he came across a fallen Turkish climber who had lost his face mask, his oxygen supply, and much of his equipment. He clearly was going to die very soon because the extreme cold and oxygen-poor air near the summit.

The Israeli, who was in excellent shape and about to achieve a lifelong dream he had been training for all his life, stopped immediately and spent several hours helping the disabled Turk get back down the mountain. He saved the Turkish climber’s life, at a loss of three of his own fingers and four toes to frostbite, and also lost the chance to make it to the summit of Everest.

Turkey and Israel have been political enemies since the Turkish-led flotilla in May 2010. There was no love lost between these nations. The Turkish flag, with its star and crescent, was visibly sewn on the climber’s outfit, so the Israeli saw it.

Other climbers had given up the Turk for dead…”

A Post as Lovely as a Tree?

Morton Arboretum 9-5-2015 SP29

Trees

By Joyce Kilmer

I think that I shall never see

A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest

Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,

And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear

A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;

Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.

~~~
Good. I’ve brought you back in time to grade school and to poem recitals mumbled and fumbled on a small wooden stage festooned with branches, hot klieg lights, coaching teachers and anxious whispering parents ready to breastfeed sweet flowing praise into their little sapling.
Snap! Now, follow me to…
The Morton Arboretum.
Saturday, in beastly 90 degree Northern Illinois late summer heat, I decided to trek once more through my childhood and teenage and adulthood forest. I call it “my forest” because I like to think of it as “my Illinois” before “they paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”
They took all the trees
And put them in a tree museum
Then they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see ’em
-From Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi
Start the music: As I walked through the “most ancient of conditions” those formative memories of my youth, Joni’s song resounded in some distant glen, somewhere within the silent swish of stately trees and near the stealing bases Blue jays and close to the ever-present droning life support system of the Illinois Toll Way.
A “tree museum”? Now I have to rest from my labors and ponder: after all the recitals and all of the seasons of my life, does my life’s mustard tree end up in the same place as it has for these trees-in a tree museum?
One good thing: it is clear to me that when I die I am recycled. You know, dust to dust, ashes to ashes. But this parking lot to parking lot stuff has got to stop. A bittersweet experience, this “tree museum” business is, on Labor Day weekend.
Encompassing the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois is industry and business of mankind’s doing. I expect that. I just didn’t want all that.
I want Illinois, Northern Illinois back. I want “The Prairie State” back.
So, I came. I saw trees and tall grass. I smelled musty earth and cedar mulch and the decay of rotten wood. I sweated profusely to feel alive once more within the epiphany of nature.
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They took all the trees
And put them in a tree museum
And they charged all the people
A dollar and a half to see ’em
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And they put up a parking lot
Hold on to your charm bracelets! Without further ado, here is a portion of my photographic record of The Trek (looking for Ents, basically, to resolve the pavement problem).
Here’s what a photographer might say: “These photos were taken during hazy midday. I prefer morning or late afternoon lighting because the contrast is more interesting and diffuse.”
As you will see, I’m no Ansel Adams or Elliot Porter but I am a visual learner. So…
… sweat glands and all I focused my attention on flora, glen and meadow, Ash, Maples, Oaks and, well, you go there. And, besides, interior forest pictures are well lit during midday. That’ll be my excuse. (Please forward all complaints about out-of-control pavement to your congressman.) Let’s WordPress on. (No parking lots were abused in this filming.)
SCOTUS’ Judicial Reviews-A Wax Museum
Abraham Lincoln’s first inaugural address, speaking here about SCOTUS:
“And while it is obviously possible that such decision may be erroneous in any given case, still the evil effect following it, being limited to that particular case, with the chance that it may be overruled and never become a precedent for other cases, can better be borne than could the evils of a different practice. At the same time, the candid citizen must confess that if the policy of the Government upon vital questions affecting the whole people is to be irrevocably fixed by decisions of the Supreme Court, the instant they are made in ordinary litigation between parties in personal actions the people will have ceased to be their own rulers, having to that extent practically resigned their Government into the hands of that eminent tribunal.” (emphasis added)
~~~

Here’s a link to an essay challenging the long-held practice of considering the Supreme Court as the final arbiter of Constitution’s meaning. This theory is not supported by Constitution itself.

Source: http://illinoisconservative.com/t-sup-court.html

The time has come to pass a Natural Marriage Amendment to the Constitution so as to define “Marriage” as between one man and one woman and nullifying unnatural and specious rights.

How do we get laws rectified these days? Certainly, immoral and unjust laws are being enacted and reinforced through Congress and the Judicial and Executive branch.

Do we continue to support abortion because government says it must take money out of your personal taxed income to support Planned Parenthood?  At what point do the good people get fed up and rebel against this government? After a trillion aborted babies? After a nation’s moral culture is destroyed by the moral lawlessness of homosexuality? What does it take for good people to act?

“A decline in courage may be the most striking feature which an outside observer notices in the West in our days. The Western world has lost its civil courage, both as a whole and separately, in each country, each government, each political party, and, of course, in the United Nations. Such a decline in courage is particularly noticeable among the ruling groups and the intellectual elite, causing an impression of loss of courage by the entire society. Of course, there are many courageous individuals, but they have no determining influence on public life….” Excerpt of Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s speech at Harvard, June of 1978, “A World Split Apart”

The U.S. House of Wax

The U.S. House of Wax

Thomas Jefferson to Spencer Roane, Sept.6, 1819; re U.S. Constitution Article 1, Section 8, Powers of Congress, Clause 18

“The constitution, on this hypothesis [the court seeking public approbation], is a mere thing of wax in the hands of the judiciary, which they may twist, and shape into any form they please. It should be remembered, as an axiom of eternal truth in politics, that whatever power in any government is independent, is absolute also; in theory only, at first, while the spirit of the people is up, but in practice, as fast as that relaxes. Independence can be trusted nowhere but with the people in mass. They are inherently independent of all but moral law.” Thomas Jefferson (emphasis added)

SCOTUS & SSM: The Fix Is In

~~~
There is a dividing line. There is a heaven and earth difference between man’s image imprinted on man’s laws (and coinage) and God’s image imprinted on man himself. The practice of homosexuality crosses the line. Homosexuality is a sin that defiles the unique imprint of the image of God on you as a person. Homosexuality is a superscription of σάρξ -sárks, properly, flesh (“carnal”), merely of human origin or empowerment.
Man was created with the superscription of God. From the Gospel according to eyewitness Mark, Chapter 12, vs.14-17:
“Teacher,” they said, “we know you are a man of integrity; you don’t regard anybody as special. You don’t bother about the outward show people put up; you teach God’s way truly.
“Well then: is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not? Should we pay it [taxes], or shouldn’t we?”
He [Jesus] knew the game they were playing. “Why are you trying to trap me? He said. “Bring me a tribute-coin; let me look at it.”
They brought one to him.
“This image, “he asked, “whose is it? And whose is this superscription?”
“Caesar’s, they replied.
“Well then, “said Jesus, give Caesar back what belongs to Caesar-and give God back what belongs to God!”
What do you give back to God? Yourself. You give back to God your obedience to abstain from sexual immorality (and its promotion) in any form.
Your created image is inscribed with a God-bound conscience and not with Caesar’s image. Your created image is meant to be a temple of the Holy Spirit and not a temple for Eros and Himeros. Your created image is meant to be a tribute back to God.
From MLK 50 Years Ago: A Just Law Is a Man-Made Law That Squares With the Law of God:
“One may well ask: How can you advocate breaking some laws and obeying others?” wrote King. “The answer lies in the fact that there are two types of laws: just and unjust. I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. I would agree with St. Augustine that ‘an unjust law is no law at all.’ (emphasis added)
Unjust laws and unjust rulers, ignoring God and/or claiming supremacy over God, demand obeisance and a bending of the will towards evil:
Early Epicurean atomist philosophers believed that death was the end that the incorporeal did not continue. That philosophy lived out: what you did in the present bore no moral constraint and there would be no consequence of future judgment except for the really, really bad things done.
The historian Plutarch recorded (via Wikipedia and other sources) that “The slopes of Taygetus have been inhabited since at least Mycenean times….The Spartans threw criminals and “unfit” (weak, sickly, deformed, or mentally retarded) infants into a chasm of Taygetus known as Ceadas or Caeadas (Greek: Καιάδας). In antiquity, male Spartan newborns were abandoned there if deemed unfit after examination for vitality. Recent evidence, found by the University of Athens, discovered remains of adult individuals which appeared to confirm that Ceadas was mainly a place of punishment for criminals, traitors and captives.” Regarding this last bit, it is my opinion that history was rewritten to ‘soften’ the Spartan image and to shore up Greece’s tourism industry which is desperately in need of more money. A newborn’s bones (cartilage-like) are not likely to be found among the ruins.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
   I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
The Moral Arithmetic of Lawlessness
“He that is not governed by the moral arithmetic of the case, or who acts from a disposition directly at war with that arithmetic, is unjust. In other words, morality requires that we should be attentive only to the tendency which belongs to any action by the necessary and universal laws of existence. ” William Godwin (emphasis added)
From the “unconstrained vision” of a product of the Enlightenment, a lapsed Presbyterian minister and an atheist…
“William Godwin (3 March 1756 – 7 April 1836) an English journalist, political philosopher and novelist. He is considered one of the first exponents of utilitarianism, and the first modern proponent of anarchism.” Wikipedia
The morally ad hoc and utilitarian William Godwin authored “Enquiry Concerning Political Justice and its Influence on Morals and Happiness.” One of the chapters is entitled “The Characters of Men Originate in their External Circumstances”.
In Godwin’s writing we are told that in-the-moment utilitarian license to act guided by proper institutions surrounding us provide happiness. Proper institutions and proper sanctuaries of reason supposedly improve mankind’s felicity. So for Godwin and his latter-day Progressives, man’s unhappiness is a problem that needs solving by any means necessary and calculated by using the ‘new math’ of each man’s ad hoc reason-based morality. In effect, man is to be a god unto himself within the constraints of man-made institutions.
Per Godwin, Utilitarian Man must act from reason alone, adding and subtracting internally the merits of his actions. And, the sum of his actions must never equate to an external ‘impractical’ divine absolute. And then, somehow, good will come out of nowhere aka Utopia. Godwin’s moral arithmetic is basically the arithmetic of lawlessness within a rule-of-reason.
Now to the lawless and flippant…
“House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said today that San Francisco’s sanctuary city policy had nothing to do with the murder of Kate Steinle.”
Really? Think before you talk, Nancy. What you are saying doesn’t add up to happiness for the family and friends of Kate Steinle.
Two recent events reveal the impoverished thinking of populist economics and “society’s crazy breed”: A mandated minimum wage increase in Chicago (Chicago-Minimum-Wage-Notice) and Op-Ed columnist Paul Krugman’s macro-hypocrisy increase.
Let’s start with the subliminal wage increase.
It feels so “Oprah-kind” to know that the minimum pay for your effort will be set at a fixed rate by Big Brother. Big Brother, of course, is not paying for the increase but he is certainly gaining political capital and tax revenue from your increased paycheck.
The media abets the ravenous pols by constantly bombarding us with income deltas as if materialism is the bread of life. Karl Marx did care about how much someone else made, he dined out on it.
On a daily basis I find some financial webpages and articles written about comparative CEO salaries. OMG! Reporter, get the socialist’s dirty needle out of your arm! Are you reporting these numbers so as to invoke class-ic envy?
“There is some ill a-brewing towards my rest, For I did dream of money-bags to-night.” William Shakespeare
Thomas Sowell, economist
Thomas Sowell, economist
“Minimum wage laws make it illegal to pay less than the government specified price for labor. By the simplest and most basic economics, a price artificially raised tends to cause more to be supplied and less to be demanded than when prices are left to be determined by supply and demand in a free market. The result is a surplus, whether the price that is set artificially high is that of farm produce and labor.
Making it illegal to pay less than a given amount does not make a worker’s productivity worth that amount….” Quote from Thomas Sowell, economist, “The Thomas Sowell Reader”.
~~~

Nothing happens in isolation. Consider also that the Obamacare/health “coverage” is also mandated. So, a worker’s hours are restricted to ensure that a business remains profitable to ensure employee jobs. And, a worker who doesn’t fulfill the Obamacare mandated-Justice Ruth Ginsburg-and-Justice John Roberts-mandated requirements is fined or taxed-actually, both. Big Brother has the gun law of coercion to your back.

Paul Krugman Sticks It To Poor People With $225,000 Salary To Study Income Inequality

By Eric Owens, Education Editor:

“This week, trustees of the cash-strapped, taxpayer-funded City University of New York (CUNY) system approved a hefty annual salary as well as the fancypants title of “distinguished professor” for Paul Krugman.

New York City’s public college system pays Krugman $225,000 each year to analyze the vexing problem of income inequality at the CUNY Graduate Center’s Luxembourg Income Study Center, Gawker notes.

Krugman’s $225,000 salary — which is $18,750 per month — does not include his undisclosed earnings from other ventures, the sum of which could be substantial.”

Why “income inequality”? (You don’t have to pay me!)

A Fool and his money are soon parted. Duh!

A Fool and his money are soon parted. Duh!

-Folly:  A fool and his money are soon parted.” That’s what state lotteries and casinos count on.

-Government and Progressive Income tax: I made a few dollars as a store clerk at age thirteen. Now I make a whole lot more money closer to retirement. And this is because I have worked a lifetime to obtain skills that have been of value to my employers. Should I be taxed more because I make more money due to the manifest effort on my part to take care of my family and to pay my bills, just to satisfy the ‘social justice” gnosis?

Time and experience: Over the course of decades I have had “income inequality” every year of my life. Should I demand equal pay because someone is making more at some point in time? No way! I need to make myself of more value to my employer and then ask for an increase in pay or find a better paying job. This brings me to my next point…

-Denial: Degreed Millennials, as an observation, think that their academic credentials buy them a ticket to ride without much effort on their part. Some even think that blue-collar labor is beneath them. This denial of reality of their situation and a lack of healthy self-awareness is the result, in part I believe, of the effects of psychotherapy’s delusional self-awareness pharmacopeia on our culture. Psychotherapy provides the illusion that you can live an existence free of any tension over time, through endless sessions of… therapy. An analysand’s every thought must be reviewed, be given equal doses of “hmmm” and then before the open-ended session’s time is done, be given equal value. “You are not to blame yourself. XYZ is responsible. Look, our time is up. See you next week. Pay up front.” And, psychotherapy’s moral deficit is not a cure for a person’s lack of awareness of the obvious-many a Millennial thinks he is entitled. And, of no value is the politician’s “Hope and Change” pharmacopeia. A Minimum wage is not a cure at all. It is a placebo that generates no economic health whatsoever. In fact it denies the existence of bad economic choices an individual has made. Yet, perverse politicians say “it’s not you. You didn’t build that problem. The institution of big business is the problem. It must take our ‘medicine’ for your cure.

-Misdirected Self-awareness:  Millennials tend to think of only what they need and not what an employer needs. Naiveté.

-Some people have a spending problem: Some people reinvest their money and create jobs. Others will spend their money and ask “Why am I ‘poor’ when others are rich?” The makeshift poor will demand the doctors of politics to up their dosage of cornucopian wealth.

In a twist of a Thomas Sowell quote, ”It is amazing how many people seem to think that the government exists to turn their prejudices into law.” I say, ”It is amazing how many people seem to think that the government exists to insure them against their bad decisions.”

Thomas Sowell – Minimum Wage Exploitation (Economics 101)

Happy Fourth of July-Dependence Day!

!!Trigger warning – Snark attack!! Proceed with clarity of mind…

Who needs ISIS when Greece, Spain, Portugal, France-the totality of the West-can self-destruct from within just by voting for idiots and appointing people into positions of power who have no business (or moral rectitude or moral courage) for holding the position they are in?

I don’t need to name names but these Prime Suspects are currently seeking to placate a deaf, obstinate and Israel-hating-West-hating Iran; these suspects have dealt a fatal blow to the sacred institution of marriage by ascribing “dignity” to godless and blatant lasciviousness; these suspects have mandated Obamacarelessness! Wow! The U.S. can now be like Europe-morally and financially bankrupt with plenty of time off work! Happy Fourth of July Dependence Day!

Alexis de Tocqueville (1805 - 1859)

Alexis de Tocqueville (1805 – 1859)

We were warned …

Alexis de Tocqueville’s (1805 – 1859) prescient warning about soft despotism accurately depicts the political will of our three branches of government including the infamous 2015 SCOTUS. And, it certainly applies to all the over-reaching regulatory agencies armed with the tentacles of the politically motivated unelected. Here is de Tocqueville’s warning (emphasis added-across the post):

“After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the government then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence: it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd.”

Democracy in America, Volume II (1840), Book Four, Chapter VI.

“Despotism may govern without faith, but liberty cannot. Religion is much more necessary in the republic which they set forth in glowing colors than in the monarchy which they attack; it is more needed in democratic republics than in any others. How is it possible that society should escape destruction if the moral tie is not strengthened in proportion as the political tie is relaxed? And what can be done with a people who are their own masters if they are not submissive to the Deity?”

“Democracy in America”, “Accidental or Providential Causes Which Contribute to Maintain the Democratic Republic in the United States.”

And this…

I studied the Koran a great deal. I came away from that study with the conviction there have been few religions in the world as deadly to men as that of Muhammad. So far as I can see, it is the principal cause of the decadence so visible today in the Muslim world and, though less absurd than the polytheism of old, its social and political tendencies are in my opinion to be feared, and I therefore regard it as a form of decadence rather than a form of progress in relation to paganism itself.”

Letter to Arthur de Gobineau, 22 October 1843, Tocqueville Reader, p. 229

And this…

“Socialism is a new form of slavery.”

“As for me, I am deeply a democrat; this is why I am in no way a socialist. Democracy and socialism cannot go together. You can’t have it both ways.”

Notes for a Speech on Socialism (1848).

And this…

Even despots accept the excellence of liberty. The simple truth is that they wish to keep it for themselves and promote the idea that no one else is at all worthy of it. Thus, our opinion of liberty does not reveal our differences but the relative value which we place on our fellow man. We can state with conviction, therefore, that a man’s support for absolute government is in direct proportion to the contempt he feels for his country.”

Ancien Regime and the Revolution (fourth edition, 1858), de Tocqueville, tr. Gerald Bevan

“The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds, that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other; and with them this conviction does not spring from that barren traditionary faith which seems to vegetate in the soul rather than to live.”

Democracy in America, Chapter XVII.

And this, the piece de resistance…

“The man who asks of freedom anything other than itself is born to be a slave.”

Old Regime (1856), p. 204

From my post “The West: Moral Courage or Moral Chaos?”

Alexander Solzhenitsyn (1918 – 2008)

Alexander Solzhenitsyn
(1918 – 2008)

Excerpts of Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s speech at Harvard, June of 1978, “A World Split Apart”

Of course, there are many courageous individuals, but they have no determining influence on public life….”

“Should one point out that from ancient times declining courage has been considered the beginning of the end?”

“Destructive and irresponsible freedom has been granted boundless space. Society appears to have little defense against the abyss of human decadence, such as, for example, misuse of liberty for moral violence against young people, such as motion pictures full of pornography, crime, and horror. It is considered to be part of freedom and theoretically counterbalanced by the young people’s right not to look or not to accept. Life organized legalistically has thus shown its inability to defend itself against the corrosion of evil.”

“And what shall we say criminality as such? Legal frames, especially in the United States, are broad enough to encourage not only individual freedom but also certain individual crimes. The culprit can go unpunished or obtain undeserved leniency with the support of thousands of public defenders. When a government starts an earnest fight against terrorism, public opinion immediately accuses it of violating the terrorist’s civil rights. There are many such cases.

Such a tilt of freedom in the direction of evil has come about gradually, but it was evidently born primarily out of a humanistic and benevolent concept according to which there is no evil inherent to human nature. The world belongs to mankind and all the defects of life are caused by wrong social systems, which must be corrected. Strangely enough, though the best social conditions have been achieved in the West, there still is criminality and there even is considerably more of it than in the pauper and lawless Soviet society.

The press too, of course, enjoys the widest freedom. (I shall be using the word press to include all media.) But what sort of use does it make of this freedom?”

“How has this unfavorable relation of forces come about? How did the West decline from its triumphal march to its present sickness? Have there been fatal turns and losses of direction in its development? It does not seem so. The West kept advancing socially in accordance with its proclaimed intentions, with the help of brilliant technological progress. And all of a sudden it found itself in its present state of weakness.

This means that the mistake must be at the root, at the very basis of human thinking in the past centuries. I refer to the prevailing Western view of the world which was first born during the Renaissance and found its political expression from the period of the Enlightenment. It became the basis for government and social science and could be defined as rationalistic humanism or humanistic autonomy: the proclaimed and enforced autonomy of man from any higher force above him. It could also be called anthropocentricity, with man seen as the center of everything that exists.”
